About

 Sumi Kwon, a native Korean, is currently a professor at Korea National University of Education. She has earned her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from Manhattan School of Music, as well as an additional Doctor of Music Education and Master of Music Education degrees from T.C. Columbia University in New York, N.Y. She graduated Ewha Womans University for Bachelor of Music, in Seoul, Korea.

 She showed her extraordinary talent as a pianist, starting with winning prizes at numerous piano competitions such as a special prize at the Artist International Competition(1997, NY, USA), a semi-finalist at the S. Stravinsky Piano Competition(1999, NJ, USA), and the Grand Prize at the 5th Korean Piano Society Competition(2004, Seoul, Korea).

While studying abroad, she participated in and performed at the Eugene Istomin Master Class (Hubbard Hall, New York), International de Piano Music Festival (Tenerife, Spain), New York Carnegie Hall debut recital, Young Artist invited recitals (Merkin Concert Hall, New York), and other prominent concert halls abroad, showing active performance. Even after returning to Korea, she continued her ambitious performance as a pianist, including a number of piano solo & duo recitals.

 At the same time, as a music educator, various studies have been conducted, including the impact of practice checklists on music practice, music-oriented convergence education, piano pedagogy curriculum development, remote music education, reading music & eye movements, and so on. In particular, the 16-volume "Magic Finger Piano" method series, released in 2019 after a seven-year research period, is positively evaluated for developing Korean piano methods that reflect modern and international trends in music education, which have traditionally relied on foreign methods.

 She has had articles published in the International Journal of Music Education, the Korean Journal of Research in Music Education, the Korean Journal of Arts Education, the Korean Musicological Society, the Journal of Music Education Science, Brian, Digital & Learning, and American Music Teachers. She has also presented her research at international, national, and regional conferences such as the College Music Society(CMS) International Conference, the Asian-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research(APSMER) International Conference, MUSICUM20 SYMPOSIUM, NCKP, the Korean Music Education Society, and so on.

As a music educator and pianist who actively embodies the practice of “musicing,” Professor Sumi Kwon served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Korean Journal of Research in Music Education for nine years. During her tenure, she made significant contributions to the journal’s recognition as an accredited journal in the Korea Citation Index and its inclusion in the SCOPUS international index. She has also served as a board member of the Korean Piano Society, the Korean Society for Arts Education, the Korean Association of Arts Educators, and the National Association of Women Professors. Currently, she serves as an Executive Board Member of the Asia Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research (APSMER) and is a member of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

 한국교원대학교 초등교육과 교수로 재직 중인 권수미 교수는 맨하탄음대에서 피아노 연주 전공으로 음악학 박사 및 석사 학위를 받았으며, 끊임없는 학구열로 콜럼비아대학 교육대학원에서 두 번 째 음악교육학 석사 및 박사학위를 취득했습니다.

 일찍이 선화, 예원 콩쿨 입상을 시작으로 예원, 서울예고 실내악 콩쿨, 음악춘추사 주최 피아노음악 콩쿨에 입상하는 등 남다른 재능을 나타내었던 그는 이후에도 Artist International Competition에서 특별상을, S. Stravinsky Piano Competition에서 Semi-Finalist 및 디플롬을 수상하였으며, 제 5회 한국 피아노학회 신인음악 콩쿨에서 대상을 수상하였습니다.

 그는 유학 중, Eugine Istomin Master Class우승 및 연주(Hubbard Hall, New York), Internacional de Piano Music Festival(Tenerife, Spain) 참가 및 연주, 뉴욕 카네기홀 데뷔 독주회, Chamber Music Recital과 독주회(Hubbard Recital Hall, New York) 영 아티스트 초청 독주회(Merkin Concert Hall, New York) 등 해외의 유수 콘서트홀에서 활발한 연주활동을 보여주었습니다. 귀국 후에도 다수의 피아노 독주회, 권수미⦁유지수 두오 연주회, 서울 심포니 오케스트라 협연 등 피아니스트로서의 의욕적인 연주활동을 이어가고 있습니다.

 동시에 권수미 교수는 음악교육자로서 음악연습에서 연습체크리스트의 영향, 음악중심 융합교육, 교사연수 프로그램 개발, 피아노교수학 교육과정 개발, 원격음악교육, 악보읽기와 눈동자 움직임 등 다양한 연구를 실시해 오고 있습니다. 특히 7년이라는 긴 연구기간을 통해 2019년에 발표한 『매직핑거 피아노』 메소드 16권 시리즈는 외국교재에 의존해오던 한국 피아노 교육계에 국제적 음악교육 동향을 반영한 현대적인 한국 피아노교재 개발이라는 긍정적인 평가를 받고 있습니다.

 이와 같은 연구는 세계음악교육학회, 한국음악교육학회, 한국예술교육학회, 한국음악교육공학회, 한국음악학회, Brian, Digital & Learning, American Music Teachers 등과 같은 국내⦁국외 다수의 학술지에 게재되었습니다. 또한 국내 유수의 학술대회 뿐만 아니라 College Music Society(CMS), the Asian-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research(APSMER), MUSICUM20 SYMPOSIUM,  NCKP와 같은 국제 학술대회에서 활발히 발표되어 왔습니다.

 음악교육자이자 피아니스트로서 ‘음악하기(musicing)’를 몸소 실천하고 있는 권수미 교수는 한국음악교육학회의 학술지인 『음악교육연구』를 편집위원장을 9년 동안 역임하며 우수등재학술지와 SCOPUS 국제 학술지에 등재시키는데 크게 기여하였으며, 한국피아노학회 이사, 한국예술교육학회, 한국예술교육자협회, 전국여교수연합회 이사 등을 역임하고 있습니다. 현재, APSMER(Asia Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research)의 상임이사이며, 세계음악교육자협회(International Society for Music Education, ISME)와 전미음악교사협회(Music Teachers National Association, MTNA) 회원입니다.
